Chapter 2 of Class 6 Science, Diversity in the Living World, explains the basic features that make an organism living. Through simple questions and answers, students can easily understand this chapter.

1. Here are two types of seeds. What differences do you find among the roots and leaf venation of their plants?

(a) Kidney beans
(b) Wheat

Answer:

(a) Kidney beans:

  • It is a dicot seed.
  • It has a taproot.
  • Leaves show reticulate venation.

(b) Wheat:

  • It is a monocot seed.
  • It has fibrous roots.
  • Leaves show parallel venation.

2. Names of some animals are given below. Group them based on their habitats. Write the names of aquatic animals in the area marked ‘A’ and terrestrial animals in the area marked ‘B’. Enter the names of animals living in both habitats in part ‘C’.

Horse, Dolphin, Frog, Sheep, Crocodile, Squirrel, Whale, Earthworm, Pigeon, Tortoise

Answer:

A (Aquatic animals):
Dolphin, Whale

B (Terrestrial animals):
Horse, Sheep, Squirrel, Pigeon, Earthworm

C (Both land and water):
Frog, Crocodile, Tortoise

3. Manu’s mother maintains a kitchen garden. One day, she was digging out radish from the soil. She told Manu that radish is a kind of root. Examine a radish and write what type of root it is. What type of venation would you observe in the leaves of a radish plant?

Answer:

Radish is a taproot.
The leaves of radish show reticulate venation.

4. Look at the image of a mountain goat and a goat found in the plains. Point out the similarities and differences between them. What are the reasons for these differences?

Answer:

Similarities:

  • Both have four legs.
  • Both are herbivores.
  • Both are mammals.

Differences:

  • Mountain goats have strong legs and thick fur.
  • Plains goats have thinner legs and less fur.

Reason:

These differences are due to adaptation to different habitats.
Mountain goats live in cold mountains, while plains goats live in normal land areas.

5. Group the following animals into two groups based on any feature other than those discussed in the chapter—

Cow, Cockroach, Pigeon, Bat, Tortoise, Whale, Fish, Grasshopper, Lizard

Answer (Based on presence of backbone):

Animals with a backbone (Vertebrates):
Cow, Pigeon, Bat, Tortoise, Whale, Fish, Lizard

Animals without a backbone (Invertebrates):
Cockroach, Grasshopper

6. As the population grows and people want more comfortable lives, forests are being cut down to meet various needs. How can this affect our surroundings? How do you think we can address this challenge?

Answer:

Effects:

  • Loss of biodiversity
  • Animals lose their habitat
  • Soil erosion
  • Increase in pollution
  • Climate change

Solutions:

  • Plant more trees
  • Protect forests
  • Reduce deforestation
  • Spread awareness about conservation

7. Analyse the flowchart. What can be examples of ‘A’ and ‘B’?

(Plant → Has leaves → Reticulate venation → A
Plant → Has leaves → Parallel venation → B)

Answer:

A: Hibiscus / Mango (Dicot plants)
B: Grass / Banana (Monocot plants)

8. Raj argues with his friend Sanjay that “Gudhal (Hibiscus) plant is a shrub.” What questions can Sanjay ask for clarification?

Answer:

Sanjay can ask:

  • Is the plant medium-sized?
  • Does it have a hard and woody stem?
  • Do the branches arise close to the ground?

If the answers are yes, then hibiscus is a shrub.

9. Based on the information in the table, find out examples of these plants for each group.

GroupType of seedType of rootExamples
ADicotTaprootMango, Mustard, Pea
BMonocotFibrous rootWheat, Rice, Maize

(a) What other similarities do plants of group A have?

They have reticulate venation and two cotyledons.

(b) What other similarities do plants of group B have?

They have parallel venation and one cotyledon.

10. Observe the labelled part of a duck in the picture given below. What differences do you observe in the feet of the duck compared to the other birds? Which activity would the duck be able to perform using this part?

Answer:

  • The duck has webbed feet.
