Chapter 3 of Class 6 Science, Mindful Eating: A Path to a Healthy Body, explains the basic features that make an organism live. Through simple questions and answers, students can easily understand this chapter.

1. Pick the odd one out and give reasons:

(i) Jowar, Bajra, Ragi, Chana

Odd one: Chana
Reason: Jowar, Bajra and Ragi are millets (nutri-cereals), while Chana is a pulse.

(ii) Kidney beans, Green gram, Soya bean, Rice

Odd one: Rice
Reason: Kidney beans, green gram and soya beans are pulses (rich in protein), while rice is a cereal (rich in carbohydrates).

2. Discuss traditional versus modern culinary practices in India.

Traditional cooking was done using a chulha and grinding was done using sil-batta.
Modern cooking uses gas stoves, mixers and grinders.

Traditional methods were time-consuming and used natural fuels.
Modern methods are faster, easier and use advanced technology.

Changes occurred due to technological development, better transport and improved lifestyle.

3. A teacher says that good food may act as medicine. List two questions Ravi can ask.

  1. How can food prevent diseases?
  2. Which nutrients help in curing deficiency diseases?

4. Not all delicious foods are healthy, and not all nutritious foods are enjoyable. Share your thoughts with examples.

Many junk foods like pizza, chips and cold drinks are tasty but unhealthy because they contain high sugar and fats.

On the other hand, green vegetables and millets are nutritious, but some children may not find them very tasty.

Healthy food helps in growth and protection from diseases, so we should choose healthy options.

5. Medu does not eat vegetables and suffers from constipation. What changes should he make?

He should:

  • Eat green leafy vegetables and fruits.
  • Include whole grains and pulses in his diet.
  • Drink sufficient water.

Vegetables and fruits provide roughage, which helps in smooth digestion and prevents constipation.

(i) Deficiency disease:

Night blindness

(ii) Lacking food component:

(iii) Food items she should include (any four):

  • Carrot

  • Milk
  • Green leafy vegetables

  • It contains natural vitamins and fibre.
  • It has no added sugar or preservatives.
  • It is healthier than canned juice.

8. Gourav’s fracture case

Calcium helps in strengthening bones and healing fractures.

(ii) Why Vitamin D syrup?

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium properly.

(iii) Question that arises:

Why is Vitamin D necessary along with calcium for bone healing?

9. Sugar does not turn blue-black with iodine. Why?

Sugar is a carbohydrate but not a starch.
Iodine reacts only with starch, so sugar does not change colour.

10. “All starches are carbohydrates, but not all carbohydrates are starches.” Explain with activity design.

Starch is a type of carbohydrate.

Activity:

  • Take potato (starch) and sugar solution.
  • Add iodine solution.
  • Potato turns blue-black (contains starch).
  • Sugar does not change colour.

Conclusion:
All starches are carbohydrates, but sugar (a carbohydrate) is not starch.

11. Iodine fell on a saree and socks. Saree turned blue-black but socks did not. Why?

The saree may contain starch (used in starching clothes), so it turned blue-black.
The socks did not contain starch, so no colour change occurred.

12. Why are millets healthy? Can eating only millets be enough?

Millets are rich in vitamins, minerals, iron, calcium and fibre.
They are called nutri-cereals.

However, eating only millets is not enough.
We need a balanced diet containing carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals.

13. How would you check if a solution is iodine?

Add the solution to a food item containing starch (like potato).
If it turns blue-black, the solution is iodine.
